Rocky Bay Resorts Campsite

#RockyBayResorts #camping #thelazycampers

Rocky Bay Resorts campsite is situated right on the coast, so close in fact that it feels like you are camping on the beach, and if it wasn’t for the line of lush coastal shrubbery separating the campsite and the shoreline, you more than likely would be camping on the beach. Rocky Bay is aptly named as the coastline encompasses the bay with magnificent boulders which are the home to many dassies who spend their day basking in the sun. The beaches are beautifully white and the ocean is lovely and warm. Rocky Bay can be found an hour down the south coast from Durban, South Africa. The South Coast below Durban is well-known for its beauty and warm weather.

The camping grounds at Rocky Bay Resorts are spacious and ample, however, if you have a specific site in mind (like one of the beachfront sites) then you need to book well in advance as many of the sites are booked up to a year in advance. We could immediately see why these sites are so popular, they are the sites with the best view. We were lucky enough to get a front row site when making our booking but when we arrived we found ourselves behind a concrete wall. I told myself that this concrete wall blocking our view was for the best as we would be protected from any undesirable weather and my friend, who was camping with us, agreed. My husband on the other hand was not impressed, he wanted to enjoy his beer while admiring the ocean view. The next morning he went scouting for a better site and sure enough, he found it: campsite 72, and what a win - right next to the ablutions and right on the beachfront and an absolutely stunning site. So, after confirming with reception, we proudly walked our erect tent down the road to our new site and the whole experience changed, suddenly we were front and centre to the action and our camping experience was transformed. With a full view of the ocean we could sit back in our chairs and really start to relax.

We chose Rocky Bay for a lazy weekend getaway and that is exactly what we got. Although Rocky Bay is not really out of the urban area, once you are inside the resort you really do feel like you are away from it all. We spent the weekend taking walks and lazing on the beach, swimming in the ocean and braaing - exactly what we needed. And the best part, we didn’t have to travel too far. Rocky Bay Resorts have everything you need to have a great weekend: power-points at all sites, lovely clean ablutions, spacious washing up areas, daily rubbish collection and braai area cleaning, beautifully maintained sites, a swimming pool (in case you don’t like swimming in the ocean) and a little cafe where you can buy ice-cream, wood and ice as well as a few other small items.

One thing we noticed about camping at Rocky Bay was the amount of pensioners who had set up camp. Our neighbours for the weekend were an older couple who had been there for 3 months. They come to the campsite every year for a few months. As far we were told they have their own little friendship community from all over the country who get together every year at Rocky Bay for a few months, and what a stunning place to meet up.

Things to do:
Take long walks along the beautiful beach if you walk towards the north coast.
Take long walks along the rocks if you walk further down the south coast.
Swim and sunbath
Enjoy watching the dassies play/ bask on the rocks
Mountain biking

Rocky Bay Resorts is a fantastic getaway location for friends, couples or families looking for a real beach retreat. Conveniently close to Durban but still far enough away to feel like you escaped for the weekend.
